Textile Reuse and Recycling
What You Can Do

clothing

NOTE: The following information is also available as a downloadable PDF Flyer or Word document.

For at least the past 25 years Americans have consumed more clothes every year than the year before. Today, textiles make up four percent of the contents of U.S. landfills! Reusing or recycling your textiles will save landfill space, as well as energy used in the manufacture of new products. It can also benefit people in need.

clothingREUSE

  • Consider donating your clean, usable clothing, bedding, curtains, shoes, and other textiles to a local charity
  • Pass on outgrown clothes to a younger sibling, friend, or neighbor
  • Mend old clothes instead of throwing them away
  • Save old clothing scraps for a quilt or other sewing project
  • Use badly ripped or stained textiles as dusting or cleaning rags

    REUSE/RECYCLE
The textile reuse and recycling industry diverts more than two million tons of textiles a year. They reclaim your old textiles, sort them into categories for one or more of the following purposes: clothingclothing

  • help provide good affordable clothes for people around the world
  • cut torn items into usable cleaning rags
  • grind unwearable cotton clothing into fiber for use in papermaking
  • shred torn sweaters to make stuffing (e.g., for automotive upholstery)
  • shred other textiles into fibers for various uses
