Gun Permits

As of August 28, 2007, a permit to purchase a firearm is no longer required.



Permits To Carry A Concealed Firearm

The St. Louis Sheriff's Department is accepting applications for permits to carry concealed weapons. Walk-ins are accepted during regular business hours: Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

City residents are required to have the following when applying for a concealed carry permit:

1. $100.00 (Cash, money order or check payable to St. Louis Sheriff) Credit cards also accepted (additional fees apply).

2. A current Missouri Driver's License or State I.D.

3. Proof of City residency. You must bring proof of your current residence. One of the following is needed: A utility bill (in your name), the most recent personal property tax receipt, voter i.d. card, or a notarized certificate of city residence (from the Board of Election Commissioners located at Tucker and Olive) .

4. The certificate of completion of a firearms safety training course

 

To fill out a gun permit application you will need to provide the following information:

Name
Address
Date of Birth
Place of Birth
Telephone Number
Gender

You will need to make an affirmation under oath and under the penalties of perjury to the following:

▪ You are a resident of the state of Missouri and have been a resident thereof for the last six months or are a member of the armed forces stationed in Missouri or the spouse of such member
▪ You are a citizen of the US
▪ You are at least twenty-three years of age
▪ You have not pled guilty to or been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment by a term exceeding one year under the laws of any state or of the US other than a crime classified as a misdemeanor under the laws of any state and punishable by a term of imprisonment of one year or less that does not involve an explosive weapon, firearm, firearm silencer, or gas gun
▪ You have not been convicted of, pled guilty to, or entered a plea of nolo contendere to one or more misdemeanor offenses involving crimes of violence within a five-year period immediately preceding application for a certificate of qualification to obtain a concealed carry endorsement
▪ You have not been convicted of two or more misdemeanor offenses involving driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs or the possession or abuse of a controlled substance within a five-year period immediately preceding application for a certificate of qualification to obtain a concealed carry endorsement
▪ You are not a fugitive from justice or currently charged in an information or indictment with the commission of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year under the laws of any state or of the United States other than a crime classified as a misdemeanor under the laws of any state and punishable by a term of imprisonment of two years or less that does not involve an explosive weapon, firearm, firearm silencer or gas gun
▪ You have not been discharged under dishonorable conditions from the United States armed forces
▪ You are not adjudged mentally incompetent at the time of application or for five years prior to application, or have not been committed to a mental health facility, as defined in section 632.005, RSMo, or a similar institution located in another state, except that a person whose release or discharge from a facility in this state pursuant to chapter 632, RSMo, or a similar discharge from a facility in another state, occurred more than five years ago without subsequent recommitment may apply
▪ You have received firearms safety training that meets the standards of applicant firearms safety training defined in subsection 1 or 2 of section 571.111
▪ You are not the respondent of a valid full order of protection which is still in effect

Once your application is approved, you will be notified via mail. Do NOT call inquiring about your application status.

 

Renewal Process

Permits may ONLY be renewed within 30 days of expiration.

City residents are required to have the following when renewing a concealed carry permit:

1. $50.00 (Cash, money order or check payable to St. Louis Sheriff). Credit cards also accepted (additional fees apply).

2. A current driver's license or nondriver's license containing a concealed carry endorsement.

3. Proof of City residency. You must bring proof of your current residence. One of the following is needed: A utility bill (in your name), the most recent personal property tax receipt, voter i.d. card, or a notarized certificate of city residence (from the Board of Election Commissioners located at Tucker and Olive) .

If your concealed carry endorsement expires and you fail to renew on or before the expiration date, an additional late fee of $10 per month for each month will be added to the renewal charge. After six months, the endorsement will be cancelled. (RSMo 571.104)
