What is SLATE Career Center?
The SLATE Career Center is a federally funded program that helps people with their job search through employment and training assistance, such as career assessments, job leads, career counseling, skills training, GED computer lab, job fairs, workshops, resume writing assistance and much more. The SLATE Career Center also helps businesses find qualified workers, provides labor market information, wage information, tax credit assistance, federal bonding for certain new hires, and more.
Can you get me a job?
We assist job seekers in helping them gain the tools necessary to perform an effective job search on their own or with assistance from our trained, experienced staff. While we don't guarantee anyone a job, we do our best to help you, and most people find employment.
Will you pay for training?
Funding is available for certain individuals who qualify for skills training in a variety of industries. Eligibility depends on many variables, including demand for job in the region, academic background, ability to support yourself during training, ability to complete program in a timely manner, and many more issues that will be discussed during a one-on-one meeting with a Career Specialist.
How long will it take to find a job?
The length of time it takes to find a job is dependent on several factors: the amount of time and effort you put into your job search, the demand for the job you are looking for, your ability to travel to the job location, having the necessary skills required, not to mention having a good resume, accurately filling out an application and successfully completing an interview. We can help you with many of these issues, but it's really up to you. If you follow the program of the SLATE Career Center, it may take you anywhere from two weeks to three months to find a job. For some professions, it may take longer. It is not unheard of for a job search to last six months or more, especially if you were making a high wage in a highly specialized job.
Do you work with adults?
Yes, the SLATE Career Center works primarily with adults, ages 18 and up. There is no age maximum.
Do you work with youth?
Yes, we have programs that work with youth through other community organizations.
Is there any cost to participate?
There is no cost to participate in any of our valuable job search services.
What kind of jobs do you have?
We work with hundreds of employers who offer all types of jobs in a variety of industries. We work with job seekers who are entry level, middle management, upper management, professional, and everyone in between.
How many people do you find jobs for?
We work with hundreds of job seekers, and typically place about 80 people in jobs per month.
Can you help me if I have a criminal record?
Yes, we can help individuals with their job search who have a criminal record, just like any other job seeker. While it may take longer to find a job for a person with a felony, we help many people every day with similar backgrounds.
Can you help me with finding childcare?
We have information on support services of community agencies with childcare assistance, as well as other information and assistance to help you take care of your basic needs so you will be ready to conduct a job search.
Can you help me if I haven't worked in several years?
If you have worked in several years, we can help you get started with your job search through career counseling and assessments, job search workshops, and possibly skills training to get you up to speed with today work environment.
