Welcome

from our Executive Director, Michael K. Holmes

SLATE continues to work with job seekers and employers of the
St. Louis Area. We will

also begin to work with both Neighborhood Associations and Economic Development Corporations in the St. Louis area to create opportunities for its citizens to obtain job training and benefits from job placement.

Under the leadership of the Workforce Investment Board (WIB) and the WIB chair, we will meet with area business leaders to
determine the needed workforce for both current and future businesses. We will continue to keep abreast of current labor market trends so we can respond with a trained workforce.

We will continue to partner with Community-Based Organizations, Faith-Based Organizations and Cultural Organizations. We will look for new ways to deliver training with the objective of creating a training facility in the City of St. Louis.

Service to youth is important to the re-birth of our community. The staff of SLATE and I will commit ourselves to the youth citizens of this city by working with service providers and business leaders to provide opportunities to those youth who want them.

Green Jobs: What are they and how can we find them?

One of the buzz words, or phrase rather, these days in workforce development circles is "green jobs".  We all see our workplaces, restaurants, banks, and other establishments we frequent jumping on the bandwagon about greening our communities and our habits.  When it comes to greening in workforce, SLATE is interested in seeing how we can work

with community organizations in providing training for green jobs in a variety of industries. We want people who have little or no experience to train for green jobs, as well as work with businesses who may want to provide incumbent worker training to help "green" their company’s products.  To help better define what SLATE considers "green jobs", take a look at the following links to see what others are doing.  Soon, SLATE will put out RFPs, and one or two of them will be geared towards green jobs training.

If you are currently working with a business in green jobs, we encourage you to continue.  If not, we encourage you to make those partnerships now.  Good luck with your research, planning and potential partnerships in making your community a greener place to live, work and play.

Welcome to the City of St. Louis UrbanFORCE!
Administered by the St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment (SLATE).

SLATE is planning to recruit and find paid summer employment for young persons living in St. Louis City this summer as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, signed into law by President Barack Obama on February 17, 2009.

The City of St. Louis UrbanFORCE program is run by SLATE’s UrbanWorks Department.  They will do everything they can to help young adults from ages 14 to 24 find meaningful work and experience new career opportunities this summer.  UrbanFORCE jobs are provided only to residents of the City of St. Louis – proof of residence is required to enroll.

The UrbanFORCE name was chosen to give our city’s young adults an identity that embraces the vision behind our nation’s economic recovery.  Urban represents our city, while FORCE expresses youthful power, energy and excitement.

All members of UrbanFORCE will be placed in jobs this summer, approximately 30 to 40 hours a week.

From corporations to community organizations, from law offices to tree trimming, and from hospitals to City Hall, SLATE will help each eligible participant find a rewarding job experience.  We anticipate that these summer jobs will begin by June 1 and finish by September 30, but continue to check this website for the latest information.

Be a part of America’s economic turnaround!
