On February 13, 2009, Myrle Mensey’s 60th
birthday, she set a new American record
in the 12 lb. weight throw. On March 8.
2009, Myrle (pictured here) broke that
record. Mensey, whose aim is to make a
difference in the lives of young women
by encouraging them to develop healthier,
more productive lifestyles, and since Mensey’s
area of athletic expertise is in the throwing
sports, shot put, hammer throw, javelin
and discus, she designed a comprehensive
youth empowerment program that smoothly
translates into a blueprint for a successful
life. Her organization, Throwing and Growing,

| Saving energy with the Urban League |
On this week’s episode of Behind
the Scenes with Lewis Reed, our inquisitive president
of the Board of Aldermen visits with Brenda
Wrench, COO of the Urban League, about
the free weatherization program, which
has benefited St. Louisans for over 15
years. “With President Obama’s American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act, we received
about $7.3 million to do over 1,200 homes
in the city of St. Louis,” Brenda tells
us. Eligibility requirements have been
lowered so that a family of four earning
up to $44,000 a year and can qualify for
weatherization. We’re happy to serve a
lot more senior citizens, families with
children and the disabled. “Weatherization
really attempts to seal the thermal envelope
of a house,” she explained. “It’s not a
home repair program. We insulate, we seal
around windows and doors, we check the
health and safety of all the combustion
equipment – furnaces, stoves, water heaters
– and we replace furnaces or air conditioning
units when they’re bad.”
