| What are you thankful for? |
Thanksgiving
is next week. Here's one response to our
current Question of the Week.
Click
on the button and share your thanks with
us!
My 5-year-old daughter brought home
a placemat she proudly made in art class.
The feathers of a paper turkey, brightly
adorned in crayon, with the three things
she is most thankful for. My first child,
her first opportunity to sing my praises
as a great Mom, I thought. Instead it
said "Water, McDonalds and Aunt Beth".
(Sigh) It's the day I truly learned to
share. - Michelle Bettis Ankoviak

Proud student and teacher from the Immigrant
and Refugee Women's Program, which is
featured this week on City Corner.
This week on City
Corner host Ivy
Hartman introduces you to the Immigrant
and Refugee Women's Program, which
is helping women become more independent
through free one-on-one English reading
and writing lessons. The teachers serve
women who cannot attend formal English
language classes because they are caring
for small children, or have work or
transportation issues, or suffer from
physical/psychological trauma. Last
year 71 volunteer teachers supported
the program and provided more than
2,800 hours of service to 87 women.
The program was founded in 1995 and
in the ensuing years has grown tremendously,
offering tutoring to immigrant and
refugee women from Afghanistan, Bosnia
and Herzegovinia, Kurdistan, Iraq,
Russia, Ethiopia and many more countries.
“Thirty percent of these women have
never gone to school in their home
country,” said Executive Director Pat
Joshu. “This is their chance not only
to learn English, but to become literate
for the first time.” Also interviewed
on the show is Karen Heitzman, president
of the board of the Immigrant and Refugee
Women's Program.
In another episode of City Corner also
airing this week, host Sarah Thompson
welcomes Robert A. Powell, executive
director and founder of Portfolio
Gallery and Educational Center, which
features artworks in a variety of
media by local African-American artists.
“There’s a message in all the art
one creates,” says Powell, who founded
the Portfolio Gallery 20 years ago
in an effort to expose St. Louis
to African-American art. “When I
came to St. Louis in 1969 there were
only a few places that showed black
artworks,” Powell explained. The
gallery is at 3514 Delmar Boulevard
near the St. Louis Symphony’s Powell
Hall.
