Traffic Accidents

There are a variety of computer programs to track those locations experiencing a large number of traffic accidents in the city. The twenty intersections that have the highest number of traffic accidents are analyzed quarterly, and collision diagrams are plotted periodically.

Up-to-date breakdowns of traffic accidents at any city location are available on-line in our office through the mainframe computer at City Hall. Accident reports are kept and are available as well.

Traffic Counts

We place traffic counters at about 2,500 locations throughout the city on a two year cycle. The data are collected by a variety of COBOL computer programs developed in-house on the mainframe. An annual traffic count book is printed out and the data are used in a variety of traffic studies. This book is available for $10.00 each. To purchase call (314) 647-3111 and ask for Mary Galler.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

The Traffic Division is in the process of building a networked computer system that will give division personnel rapid access to information regarding street resurfacing, stop sign and traffic signal locations, one-way streets, cul-de-sacs, street closures, and parking regulations. This data will be linked to the new City GIS base map. Office personnel will be able to call up a portion of the map of St. Louis on a computer screen and access the above information by intersection, street block, or specific neighborhood.
