Signalized Intersections

There are 650 signalized intersections within the City of St. Louis. Properly functioning traffic signals are a very high priority for traffic safety. When a problem occurs, we respond within one hour.

INNOVATIONS

Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Program*

Presently the Traffic Division is working to upgrade from mechanical to digital controls. Such a move will lower maintanance costs and decrease delays and air polution.

CMAQ* Phase I. All signals along Gravois, McCausland / Skinker, Broadway / 7th St., Arsenal to Park has been completed.

CMAQ* Phase II. Aproximately 250 signals to be rebuilt with fiber optic communications using federal funding (estimated completion date November 1999)

Signals Under Construction As Of Oct. 10, 1999:

  • Grand Ave, Natural Bridge.
  • Various signal removals and installations around the TransWorld Stadium and Dr. M. L. King Bridge (MoDoT).
  • Traffic Signal Controller replacements in the Central Bussiness Distric of our downtown.

Light Emitting Diodes (LED) Traffic Signals

The new LED technology represents a new generation in the illumination of traffic signals.  Since November 1998, the Traffic Division has installed more than one hundred such lights, replacing ordinary red incandescent lamps.

The LED technology provides greater reliability, less maintenance, and more important, it reduces energy consumption by  85%, compared with the incandescent that it replaces.

Plans continue for the installation of such lights thoughout the traffic signal system within the city of St Louis, in an effort to reduce energy cost and save taxpayers’ money.
