Light Emitting Diodes (LED) Traffic Signals The new LED technology represents a new generation in the illumination of traffic signals. Since November 1998, the Traffic Division has installed more than one hundred such lights, replacing ordinary red incandescent lamps. The LED technology provides greater reliability, less maintenance, and more important, it reduces energy consumption by 85%, compared with the incandescent that it replaces. Plans continue for the installation of such lights thoughout the traffic signal system within the city of St Louis, in an effort to reduce energy cost and save taxpayers’ money. |
