Rights in the Transition Process

 

Beginning at age 14, students with disabilities have the right to have a transition plan as part of the Individual Education Plan (IEP)

 

This plan should be based on needs and interests, and may include:

 

Instruction that will prepare the student for work and living in the community,

 

Job experiences,

 

Community experiences,

 

Instruction in daily living skills,

 

Planning for career, employment, training, college, recreation, transportation, living arrangements, medical needs, self-advocacy, safety, living skills, income support, and legal needs.

Living Independently

 

Here are some things young adults should know to be independent:

 

·     Make good decisions to be safe at home alone,

 

·     Use the telephone to call 911, neighbors, and friends,

 

·     Prepare a simple meal,

 

·     Store food safely,

 

·        Know how to enter and leave the house on his/her own,

 

·     Take care of personal hygiene,

 

·     Participate in recreation or have leisure interests,

 

·     Do chores on his or her own,

 

·     Get around your neighborhood,

Meet with your Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor to discuss your options.

Know your disability.  Be prepared to ask for the help you need to be a successful student.

 

Meet with the disability support office at your college to discuss accommodations you may need.
