Gibson Heights Neighborhood News, April 2001
Primary interest:
A town hall meeting, with appearances by candidates in the March 6 primary, will be on Saturday, February 24, starting at 6 p.m., at Lighthouse Outreach Center.
Correction regarding the Family Care Health Center:
FCHC, at 4352 Manchester, is an independent, federally funded organization that refuses treatment to no one. The free Adult Acute Care service on Saturday mornings (9-12) is co-sponsored by the center and Washington University. We apologize for the different statements in the January newsletter.
Help Wanted:
Getting the newsletter delivered throughout the Gibson Heights neighborhood gets the word out about what has been happening and reminds everyone of the monthly meeting schedule. It takes about 30 minutes to distribute the news to each residence on both sides of a block. If you take the opportunity to stop and visit with a few people, the time is a little longer but much more pleasant. We'd like to have enough "regulars" so that each person has to do only one block and "reserves" to fill in if someone can't make it.
The schedule: The newsletter is ready on the Thursday before the meeting date, which is always the third Tuesday of the month. Copies are brought to the homes of the delivery volunteers. Delivery should be sometime during the weekend (preferably on Friday evening or Saturday) so that people are reminded and have time to plan on coming.
Who's Who in Gibson Heights
Elena Shepard is one of the association's two secretaries and works in the Central West End. With a degree in Urban Studies, Elena is committed to her neighborhood and her community. With the help of Neighborhood Housing Services ("They were great," says Elena), she purchased a 2-family on Gibson and arrived by Ryder Truck. Still a little new to the neighborhood, she is sizing things up to help her decide where her skills and time can best be used for all of us.
Jennifer Halling is the association's other secretary. A native of Kansas, Jennifer earned her BA in English at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. She has worked as a marketer and a pastoral counselor. Now she is a senior manuscript editor at Mosby Publishing. Jennifer has known about the neighborhood for eleven years as a member of St. Cronan Church. She edits the church's quarterly newsletter and is involved in many other activities there. Two and a half years ago, she decided to move into the neighborhood "because so many wonderful people live here and I wanted to live close to several good friends who have formed a community in this neighborhood." She also wanted to live in a racially mixed city neighborhood. Jennifer meets with a book group and a women's prayer group, does centering prayer, and enjoys walking in area parks, going to movies, and listening to music. And some fun comes with all those activities: Jennifer is a punster.
