Gibson Heights Neighborhood News, March 2001
The billboard:
Improvement at Kingshighway and Manchester is at hand! The infamous billboard there should come down by the end of April as plans for the Triangle Park begin to take effect. After that there will be cleanup and, perhaps, some initial planting this spring. A report on the Triangle Park at the association's February meeting presented many possibilities for this "front door" to the neighborhood. Possibilities range from swaths of contrasting plants to sturdy seats and tables that double as drums. Questions about placement of entrances and fencing along with other details are still open. You can make your suggestions to Jenny Strayer at Bi-State's Arts-in-Transit office, by phone at 982.1413 or by email.
Assisted Living Facility:
Work is underway in the Cadet- Kingshighway area for the Assisted Living Facility. The area has been fenced and the buildings boarded up. Initial work of removing asbestos is underway and demolition should begin soon. Completion of the project is scheduled for the Spring, 2002.
Community Development Corporation:
The Forest Park Southeast Housing Corporation has reorganized into a Community Development Corporation. Phil Minden, a board member, reports that the new corporation is undertaking a major new project known as "Park East." The project calls for buying 99 units. After rehabilitation, twelve buildings will be for sale, and 73 rental units will be available. The properties are scattered in the Gibson Heights and other areas of Forest Park Southeast. Also, the corporation plans to hire a staff person who will work on bringing businesses and artists to Manchester in the "Main Street" project.
Operation Brightside:
Clean up for Gibson heights is scheduled for April 28. Anyone wanting to help in any way should contact president Sonda Thompson at 534.1709.
Police Sub-station:
We have a substation at 4503 Arco. Officers use the apartment there mostly during the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift, but they are also around periodically during daylight hours and several times in the evening. The space is donated and a computer is loaned for the substation. But phone, electric, and gas bills have to be paid by donations from the neighborhood. "If donations don't pick up the sub station will be NO MORE," said a substation supporter. Please help out by supporting this asset for the neighborhood. For further information or to contribute, just contact Mark Norwood at 534.4154.
Timothy Tumbrink
Officer Tumbrink is the neighborhood's new liaison from the police department. We're saving space in the April newsletter for a more complete introduction.
