What will Highway 40 reconstruction
do to the neighborhood??? -
The redesign and reconstruction of Highway 40 means new interchanges at
Kingshighway and at Tower Grove. It may mean the loss of the overpasses at
Taylor, Newstead, and Boyle. Access to Forest Park, Metrolink, and the Central
West End will be changed. The footbridge over the highway could be lost.
-
Missouri Department of Transportation representatives will be at the May 15
meeting to make a presentation and listen to concerns. Turn over this news page
for more details. If you cannot make it to the meeting or if you have
questions, e-mail

Working together:
-
Brightside's "blitz" on April 28 was an important step in
community building as well as in creating better appearances, said Sonda
Thompson, who spearheaded neighborhood efforts. The combined turnout for Gibson
Heights, New Boyle, and Ranken East was 50 people this year, way up from last
year, Sonda reported. There is still time to support the Brightside effort by
participating in "Walk on the Brightside" which will be held May 19. Contact
Sonda for details (534.1709).

Breaking the Silence:
-
The series on the effects of addictions on families and
communities continues with sessions on:
-
examples of beating addiction (June 3);
- what the community can do (June 10);
- parenting drug-free youth (June 17); and
- focus groups on helping ourselves (June 24).
The sessions are on Sunday
afternoons at 2:00 p.m. at Agape Church, Tower Grove and Swan.
-
Earlier sessions provided information on global connections in the drug
trade, information on identifying abused substances, and family dynamics that
enable drug abuse. The series coordinators urge your participation in the
remaining sessions to help the neighborhood understand the issues and move
towards improving the neighborhood. Rev. James Potter, Pam Talley, Lisa von
Stamwitz, and Serena Muhammad are coordinating the series.

Who's Who in Gibson Heights
- Angie Pickettis the friendly and energetic lady you see sweeping and cleaning
up around Wichita and Taylor. A relative newcomer to Gibson Heights (arriving
just last February), Angie is busy with her family - two grown daughters,
nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Right now she is looking forward to a trip
to Las Vegas, a Mother's Day gift from her daughters. Her interests include her
church choir, cooking, gardening, and bargains. "I love yard sales and thrift
stores," she says. How does Angie keep up with all this activity and her
willingness to help out in the neighborhood? She puts it simply: "I treat people
the way I want to be treated."
- Sharonica Hardinis the newly hired principal for Adams School.
Ms. Hardin moves to Adams from Compton Drew Middle School.
