Gibson Heights Neighborhood News, June 2001
Home safety loans and equipment
A fire inspector and Eric Madkins from Neighborhood Housing Services will discuss fire hazards, prevention, and inspections at the Association's June 19 meeting. The information to be covered will include how and when to file a claim. Forgivable and regular loans for home improvement to correct safety issues are available, up to $10,000.
Persons attending the meeting will be eligible to receive fire extinguishers and smoke alarms.
Custom, legend, and culture in stone
The Chapungu sculpture exhibit will continue at the Missouri Botanical (Shaw's) Garden through October 7. Admission to the garden is free to city residents on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, when the gates open at 7 a.m.
The sculptures hand carved by the Shona people of Zimbabwe embody the depth and wisdom of an ancient African culture and way of life. The themes are family and community, living in harmony with nature, custom and legend, village life, the spiritual world, and the roles of women and elders. Go see it; better yet, go see it with your family.
New footbridge in Highway 40 plans
A single-point urban interchange will be built at Kingshighway when Highway 40 reconstruction gets underway. Plans also call for a wider, more accessible footbridge across the highway, according to state planners who presented information at the Association's May meeting. Residents still have time to submit comments and suggestions. Further information is available from the project manager, Lesley Solinger Hoffarth at 1-888-ASK-MoDOT or at www.thenewi64.org.
New baseball field, Adams Park
The Jim Edmonds field will be dedicated on Monday, June 18 at 1:45 p.m. at Adams Park (behind the new construction at Adams School, 1300 Tower Grove).
Historical district
The area bounded by Kingshighway, Sarah, Manchester, and Chouteau will be approved by the National Register in October. Kudos to the committee members who worked on that effort.
