Billboard and buildings gone!

The billboard at Kingshighway and Manchester
has disappeared, as have the buildings at the site of
the new assisted living center. Construction of the
center will begin soon and one more step has been
taken toward developing the Triangle Park!

National Night Out
-
There is, however, an important event in August:
the 18th annual National Night Out (NNO) will be
Tuesday, August 7, from 7 to 10 p.m.
NNO is designed to: heighten crime and drug
prevention awareness; generate local anti-crime
programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-
community partnerships; and send a message to
criminals, letting them know that neighborhoods are
organized and fighting back.
Along with the traditional display of front porch
vigils, neighborhoods observe NNO with block
parties, cook outs, visits from local police, parades,
flashlight walks, contests, and youth programs.
Organizers of the annual event say that it has
proven to be an effective, inexpensive, and enjoyable
program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-
community partnerships in the fight for a safer nation,
with benefits extending well beyond the one night.
For more details and making local NNO plans,
come to the July 17 meeting!
(Background information is at
NNO web site.

New community center director
The Adams Park Community Center (APCC) hired
Charles W. "Chuck" Tyler as its executive director.
Tyler has already begun work, planning a few programs
and getting them working really well. The center is
scheduled to open in October.
Tyler stresses that the new building with the
reopened Adams School is not the end of the road for
FPSE community building. While the center's location
at the school is a "natural" for community building,
people are invaluable and have to be involved, he said.
Longer term, Tyler expects to provide programs for
all interests in the neighborhood, for instance, programs
for seniors, for health, for job training, and for various
kinds of recreation.
Tyler is a life-long St. Louisan, now living in the
Shaw Neighborhood. Before coming to APCC, he spent
four years as the director of community building in
Castle Pointe for Beyond Housing.
If you have questions or suggestions about the center,
call Tyler at 314.652.0895.
