Housing Corporation board vacancies
The Forest Parks Southeast Housing Corporation has board of directors opening for 4 at-large members and one business member, beginning January, 2002. Applications must be submitted by December 14. Application forms will be available at the November 20 meeting. Or you may contact any present board member or Marcella Palmieri, executive director, at 533.6704 for further information or a form.
St. Vincent de Paul work honored
For over a century the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Cronan's has given emergency help to families in the neighborhood. That effort was honored on October 10 with the society's South Central Council's granting of the Betty Day Award "in recognition of outstanding service and commitment" to Joe Roddy, who has 47 years of service with the society.
Winter heating help
Statewide, 29,000 households are without heat and another 50,000 face disconnection for nonpayment. Three programs help with winter heating costs: Low Income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEP); Weatherization Assistance Program; and Energy Crisis Intervention Program (ECIP). Each program can help renters as well as home owners (landlord permission is required in the weatherization program). Income limits apply in all the programs.
LIHEAP helps pay heating bills from December through March. ECIP offers emergency winter payments of up to $600 for reconnection, preventing disconnection, furnace repairs, temporary shelter, warm clothing and other emergency help.
For both programs, income documentation is needed: Social Security numbers for persons living in the home; most recent bill from main heating source (kerosene not eligible); proof of all income sources for all persons in the household; proof of age if 65 or older; proof of the amount of any cash and securities owned by any member of the household. Contact the Division of Family Services (DFS) at 314.426.9600 or call 1.800.392.1261.
Weatherization can reduce heating costs as much as 30%. The Department of Natural Resources's Weatherization Assistance Program will do energy audits, test heating systems for efficiency and safety, increase insulation, and "clean and tune" or even replace a heating system. The program is for low-income households, especially those with physical disabilities, the elderly, children, and others hard hit by the energy crisis. Contact Rolandis Nash at the Urban League, 314.615.3611 or 314.615.3600.
