The bus stops at Angie's!
-
Gibson Height's own Angie Renner is featured as a special part of neighborhood history at the new bus shelter at Sarah and Vandeventer. The new shelter has four mosaic images with tiled signs giving background abut each of the subjects in the mosaics.
Angie is a "native" of the neighborhood, living on Arco all her life. She remembers when gaslights lit the streets and the lamplighter sold bootleg liquor as he made his rounds. She says of the neighborhood, "It is a place where neighbors have always looked out for one another."
Other subjects in the mosaics are: Henry Shaw whose estate opened to the public as Missouri Botanical Gardens in 1859; Engine House 29 that served the neighborhood from 1219 S. Vandeventer from 1887 to 1965; and Ujamaa Maktaba, the bookstore at Tower Grove and Manchester for the last nine years. Marus Watson,
Ujamaa's proprietor, does not measure success by the number of customers at the bookstore but by opportunities for bringing literature to readers and providing a positive view of African American people.
The mosaics were made by ArtWorks apprentices. Arts in Transit commissioned the work in conjunction with ArtWorks and the Craft Alliance. The Community Council endorsed the project at its September 28, 1999 meeting. The Missouri Arts Council and the Regional Arts Commission provided funding.

Good Neighbor Network

A meeting to introduce the "Forest Park Southeast Good Neighbor Network" initiative will be held on December 10,
2002 in the Norfolk Room of the Adams Park Community Center, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.
Rick Bonasch of Metropolis explained that the purpose of the network is to create a neighborhood-wide network of community leaders at the block level to organize neighborhood events, cleanup projects, block parties, neighborhood directories, and so on. The efforts of individuals will be self-determined, Bonasch said.
Ginnie Nester, of the St. Louis Hills block captain program will be the featured speaker. Sue Lauritsen will update neighbors on activities of the Security Task Force and invite participation with Sue's Security Task Force efforts, Bonasch said. Denie Robinson, project coordinator of the Urban League's Federation of Block Units program is also invited to the meeting.
The Good Neighbor Network is a continuing initiative of the Metropolis St. Louis and the Forest Park Southeast Housing Corporation.
