Council meeting
May 23, 2000

Bob Babione reported on the Enough-is-Enough anti-racism service of May 21,
which grew out of an ordeal suffered by two sons and a nephew of Greg and Edna Campbell.
The related "Statement of Purpose" has not yet been received for circulation. Bob expressed gratitude for Pastor Martin's neighborhood work and passed around a home made thank you "card" for Pastor Martin, with an envelope for contributions. A gathering for Pastor Martin will be on June 4, 5 to 7 p.m., at the Lighthouse. NSO Brian Wilson was present and encouraged calls about problems. Marcella Palmieri talked about developing the Housing Corporation-Community Council relationship. Alderman Roddy was applauded upon announcing he had nothing special to say. Greg Echele and his staff presented the possibility of building the Family Resource Center's "dream home" in FPSE. Various suggestions were made about location - how FRC would or would not fit in on Manchester. The reception for the FRC was favorable, with all present indicating support. No one volunteered for the nurse-hiring committee, which should begin interviewing in June for implementation of the Deaconess grant; there was some discussion of the status of the summer youth program planning and Saundra Moss talked about having contacted Robin Gierer at ARCHS about serving 200 youth in the later part of the summer. The traffic pattern for the Adams School met no strong opposition; there were some reservations about the parking at Tower Grove / Vista. Alderman Roddy answered some questions about the Adams School parking situation - the Board of Education has its own eminent domain power. With Mark Weber's consent, the opening prayer matter was postponed to next meeting. Phil presented the Constitution report and discussion followed, running overtime, but with a reduced audience. The discussion included financing the Council, need for more personal outreach, and mixed comments about publication of the Buzz: content not interesting to residents generally; slow turnaround; need for graphics; shock at the high cost; and positive comments about some regular readers. Council vacancies, other committee reports, and open forum were not reached, though several persons not on the Council (including a prospective Norfolk resident) participated in the discussions of the nurse position, Adams School traffic pattern, Buzz, and Constitution. |
