Report on Town Hall meeting held on February 24, 2001
By George J. Jones, Jr.,
Community Council Co-Chair

Considering the short notice, and some other problems beyond our control, including very bad weather, our first Town Hall Meeting was a success. Residents had an opportunity to hear from three candidates for mayor and ask questions. We got a opportunity to hear from community residents about their concerns for the FPSE community. All showed a interest in becoming involved with our community-driven process.

Some of the issues raised where:

  • the Redevelopment process;
  • small business development / assistance; adequate housing and income for residents;
  • downtown revitalization; Manchester revitalization;
  • rights of individual residents vs large business;
  • eminent domain in Rankin East, with dislocation seniors who were born in their homes;
  • lack of street access due to commercial truck traffic in Rankin East;
  • better schools, including getting parents involved in school issues, effective youth / parent developmental skills;
  • better communication between residents, senior citizens, and community organizations;
  • community unity and advocacy; and
  • better commucation with our elected representives.

One of our main goals is to go out into the community and listen and learn.

We plan to continue our outreach to the community, with additional Town Hall meetings at other locations throughout the community. This will not be a easy process, and will require more hard work from all of us. I believe it is paramount to our strategic planning process. We must be open and receptive.

We have also initiated discussions with other local and national organizations who have shown a interst in supporting our efforts to make Forest Park Southeast a truly Sustainable Neighborhood.
