Dear Friends of Forest Park:

It is a pleasure to submit to the Annual Report of the Forest Park Advisory Board. Many wonderful things have happened to and in Forest Park this year. The City of St. Louis and Forest Park Forever have reached their original fund raising goal of $86 million. After reaching that goal, Forest Park Forever raised the bar for itself and pledged to raise another $5 million. The vision outlined in the Master Plan is taking shape. The river is indeed returning to Forest Park. We see it flowing now through a rocky stream just east of the Muny and near Steinburg Rink. The ever-popular hard surface path is changing in character. A portion of the dual path is complete near Steinberg Rink. Using bridges over the river and new landscaping, the dual path invites its users to experience each new area it passes through.

The landscape of the Park continues to evolve and the community is involved in its creation and care. The Forest Park Savanna Stewards, a volunteer group, have created and are maintaining a savanna near the Kennedy Forest on Skinker Blvd. The Missouri Department of Conservation continues to be involved with the Kennedy Forest. The volunteer groups, The Flora Conservancy and the Water Gardening Society, prepare, plant and help maintain the gardens around the Jewel Box. In the fall of 2000, The Flora Conservancy undertook the formidable task of planting the Oehme van Sweden plan at Pagoda Circle. The Flora Conservancy continues to maintain Murphy Lake near Lindell Blvd. Countless other volunteers have spent their time and energy restoring Forest Park. The Park's cultural institutions are changing as well. The Missouri Historical Society has settled into its new building. The reopening of the Planetarium is anticipated later this spring. The Zoo continues to build inside its boundaries.

This year will prove to be another year of change in Forest Park. Construction will begin on many projects; construction will be completed on others; and many projects will progress in the design process. December 2000 marks the halfway point from the adoption of the Plan in December 1995 to its goal of substantial implementation by December 2004. Forest Park Forever and the City of St. Louis have exceeded all expectations in successfully implementing this plan. Our Board continues to carefully evaluate all of the projects that come before us and to work with Forest Park Forever and the City in achieving the goals of the Master plan. The following pages highlight Master Plan accomplishments over the past year.

The meetings of the Forest Park Advisory Board are open to the public. Copies of the minutes of the meeting are available at the Parks Department office at 5600 Clayton Avenue, in Forest Park.

Sincerely,

Jean L. Cowell

Chairman, Forest Park Advisory Board
