Schools

Public Schools

The St. Louis Public School system includes 68 elementary schools, 22 middle schools and 12 high schools. Enrollment for the 2000-2001 school year included 43,233 students. School-based Management, Community Education Centers, the Caring Communities Program, and the Reading Initiative are some of the programs designed to strengthen the education system with the aid of community partners.

Twenty-six magnet schools within the St. Louis Public School system offer nationally recognized curriculum in the visual and performing arts, gifted education, international studies, basic instruction, graphic design, math/science and technology, academics and athletics, and military/ROTC training. Metro High School, a magnet high school, has a competitive application process. Its graduates always include several National Merit Scholarship finalists.

Charter Schools

Charter Schools are a new alternative to public education in Missouri. Charter schools are independent public schools authorized to operate under a charter or contract with the state of Missouri. Charter schools are created by teachers, parents or citizens with a common educational mission. There are no admission requirements and enrollment is open to all students limited only by the capacity of the school. Click here for a list of St. Louis Charter Schools.

Catholic and Lutheran Schools

Some families choose Catholic, Lutheran or other religiously affiliated schools near where they live or work. Many of these schools have a long history in St. Louis. You will find them located throughout the city.
