Churches

Many denominations of historic African-American churches are found in this neighborhood. Worshippers from all over the metropolitan area travel on Sundays and throughout the week to attend overflowing, spirit nourishing services. Listed is information about some of the area churches:

Pleasant Green A.M.E.
4600 Page Ave.

Pleasant Green AMEIn 1866, Pleasant Green was established when small groups of members began holding prayer meetings, under the guidance of the Reverend Thomas E. Napier. The young congregation son acquired a rented storefront at the corner of Main and Mullanphy streets. During the next two decades, the church moved to several different rented locations. In 1908, the congregation purchased its own building at Elliot and Wash (now Cole) streets. Pleasant Green bought its current sanctuary, a former synagogue at West End Avenue and Page Boulevard, in 1945. For many years, the church held an Easter baptismal ceremony on the banks of the Mississippi River.
On August 18, 1985, West End Avenue between Newberry Terrace and Page Boulevard was renamed to honor the Reverend George H. Pruitt (1885-1978), who was pastor at Pleasant Green Baptist Church from 1939 until his death. In 1948 he organized the Acacia Lodge No.166 of the Masonic Order. He was also a member of the Educational Department of the National Baptist Convention U.S.A.
