Founded 1834

Our mission is to preach, teach, and live the Word of God in our community and throughout the world.

We are an autonomous congregation, governed by an elected Board of Governors which we call the consistory. The Holy Bible is the primary authority for all of our deliberations. We are free to make decisions regarding our congregational life, but we are in covenant with the United Church of Christ denomination, whose headquarters are in Cleveland, Ohio. Our roots are in the flight of the Pilgrims and German population seeking the freedom of the new land. We continue to be dedicated to peace and justice in our present society. Our congregation stands for equality for all people.

Having a continuous history of 163 years in St. Louis, we say that "we have one foot in the past and one foot in the future."

Our current pastor is Dr. Louis V. Huber, B.D., University of Missouri; B.D., D.D., Eden Seminary; and M.S.D., Washington University. We stand ready to be of service.

Everyone is welcome to worship with us at 10:15 on Sunday mornings. Please call for further information and listings of exciting programs and activities.

In an earlier Cornerstone, we found this passage from Exodus 25:8: "LET THEM MAKE ME A SANCTUARY, THAT I MAY DWELL AMONG THEM." This is our prayer for Holy Ghost United Church of Christ.

St. Joan of Arc Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, established September 30, 1940, by Archbishop John Glennon. Our present pastor is Rev. Msgr. Lawrence J. Walsh, with Rev. Bradley Modde, Associate Pastor; Rev. John Dempsey, Part-time Associate; Rev. Msgr. Richard Gallagher, In Residence; Deacon Wayne Bryant; Deacon Daniel Henroid; and Rev. Mr. Gregory Klump, Transitional Deacon.

Our first 50 years have witnessed the construction of the parish buildings, the birth of numerous parish organizations and boards, and, of course, Homecoming! We will be celebrating our 25th Annual Homecoming this year on the school grounds on Saturday, September 6 (11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.) and Sunday, September 7 (noon to 10:00 p.m.). The parish continues to exhibit vitality through its over 2,000 families, 500 grade school children, and its hundreds of volunteers.

Our parish mission defines as our ultimate goal to continue the mission of Jesus, namely to build the Kingdom of God in our area of the world -- South St. Louis. With this in mind, our parish identifies four essential components to carry out that mission:

1. The celebration of the Eucharist (Mass) draws us together into the one Body of Christ.

2. We recognize that to be a Catholic parish means to be a welcoming parish. God calls us to be a loving and caring community for all those who live around us, within and beyond our parish boundaries.

3. We acknowledge the importance of ongoing faith development. Religions education does not end with grade school, but continues into our youth group, scripture study, adult education, and Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults.

4. We acknowledge that it is through the power of the Holy Spirit that the gifts of the many members come together to build the Kingdom of God. We recognize that the gifts we receive from God must also be used for the sake of others and for furthering the Kingdom.
