Neighborhood InstitutionsThis neighborhood is the home to many institutions which provide for the stabilizing force in the community. St. Peter's A.M.E. Church, UMC Church of Christ, and St. Elizabeth Catholic Church offer spiritual guidance and many community outreach programs. The Penrose Self-Reliant Neighborhood Association is the engine behind residents stabilizing efforts. The area is benefiting from the coordinating efforts between Neighborhood organizations, neighborhood residents, and the City's Operation ConServ to develop housing opportunities for its residents. Penrose is also the home of Mathew-Dickey Boys Club, a nationally recognized organization providing many innovative youth activity programs. The Nearby Yeatman Community School and the International Studies Magnent School provide teaching and educational opportunities. In addition, several first quality private and parochial school in or near Penrose neighborhood provide before-and-after-school care, preschool, kindergarten, elementary and secondary school programs. The Julia Davis Branch Library opened in 1993 is the cultural and intellectual heart of the community. The library has enhanced the educational opportunities for area youth and residents by making available its 50,000 book collection, research collection on African American history, computers and educational software. Prince Hall Family Support Center on North Newstead, is a large employer and offers many employment opportunities to qualified area residents. The Cyber Community Center provides outreach services to youth & adults through Providence Counseling.
