Princeton Heights Neighborhood
Housing Stock
Houses here went up when Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and Franklin D. Roosevelt were U.S. presidents.
Many people didn't own cars and took the bus, streetcar,
or their own two feet to wherever they needed to go.
Thus, this is a quite pedestrian-friendly area like many city neighborhoods.
Oxblood colored brick structures predominate -- mostly single-family bungalows and flat-roof shotgun cottages.
(Called "shotgun" because the homes' floor plans could allow one to fire a
shotgun straight through the house from front to back door without hitting any walls.
Not that anybody really does this, mind you, but they could.)
There are also some two- to four-family flats and bigger apartment buildings that pepper the area.
No apartment complexes here: The area was built up during a time when businesses,
multi-family and single family structures were much more integrated with one another.
That all changed after World War II to the newer suburban separations
into apartment complexes, subdivisions and shopping districts.
