The Center for Emerging Technologies

The Center for Emerging Technologies serves the St. Louis Metropolitan Region and the State of Missouri by working to develop the instrastructure necessary to support technology-driven economic development. Activities are focused on creating and growing potentially high-growth advanced technology companies, enhancing the region’s existing technology companies, and capitalizing on the region’s extensive university research base. The Center acts as a catalyst to:

  • Connect technology entrepreneurs to specialized business, technology and financial resources and assistance.
  • Provide focused education and training opportunities for technology entrepreneurs, university faculty and students, and corporate researchers.
  • Offer start-up companies affordable research facilities, high-speed telecommunications, and access to specialized university facilities and equipment.
  • Facilitate technology transfer from universities, corporations and federal labs for commercialization.
  • Identify opportunities for strategic alliances with universities and between small and large technology-based companies.
  • Assist in forming partnerships between technology entrepreneurs and researchers at universities and federal labs.
  • Mobilize public, private and university alliances aimed at scaling up targeted industries and pursuing technology-driven economic development.

The Center was established in June 1995 as a joint endeavor of the Missouri Department of Economic Development and the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Center’s incubator has been the result of an additional partnership with the City of St. Louis (St. Louis Development Corporation), the Federal Government (Economic Development Administration), the State (Missouri Development Finance Board), private industry, and the RCGA Greater St. Louis Economic Development Council.

Advanced technology companies targeted by the Center include telecommunications, medical instruments and medical devices, biotechnology, bioagriculture, genetic engineering and environmental technology firms. The Center provides tenant and affiliate companies a full range of amenities, services and regular networking opportunities.

The Center assists companies with access to:

  • Assistance with creating strategic business plans
  • Market research and strategic market planning
  • Assistance with SBIR and other Federal research grants
