Mayor Harmon presented the first Mayor's Spirit of St. Louis Award to Orville Middendorf for opting to remain in the City and expand the new meat processing and distribution center at the current site. SLDC provided a $6 million economic development incentive package to assist Middendorf. This partnership won the City of St. Louis a "Best Practice Award" from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in the summer of 1998. The company is an example of the City's ongoing revitalization of the North Riverfront - Broadway industrial corridor initiative.
