Historian and author Thomas C. Danisi, a resident of the Lafayette Square neighborhood since 1975, is the premier expert on Antoine Soulard and his contribution to the events surrounding the Louisiana Purchase and the transformation of Upper Louisiana into U.S. territory. Danisi recently completed the writing of a manuscript titled High Destiny: The Biography of Meriwether Lewis. Following is a link to a relevant, illustrated article titled "The Commonfields of St. Louis and Residences." It details the early development of the areas now occupied by Soulard, Lafayette Square and some adjoining neighborhoods up to the time of the Civil War. (People Productions photo by Clark Rowley)

Walking Tours

History buffs and folks looking for some moderate exercise, as well as those curious about the Soulard Historic District, are invited to participate in a walking tour of the neighborhood. Provided will be discussions of architectural characteristics and insights into the people who built and lived in early Soulard. The charge is $10 per person for a two hour tour, minimum $20 per tour. Reservations required, minimum 24 hours advanced notice. Comfortable shoes are suggested and participants should bring a water bottle. For additional information, please e-mail Madame Chouteau at showvillage@yahoo.com. All proceeds are used to increase security in the neighborhood. Tours begin and end at the Soulard Farmers' Market, unless otherwise discussed.

The Soulard neighborhood is defined by the space between I-55 and South 7th Street/South Broadway from just north of the Soulard Farmers' Market to several blocks south of the Anheuser-Busch Brewery.
