Meetings: This committee currently meets with the Commercial Development Committee on the
2nd Tuesday of each month @ 6:00pm at a place To Be Determined. Please call
Patrick Moore, Commercial Committee Chair, at 772-6263 for location each month.
This committee is responsible for developing residential redevelopment strategies for
the neighborhood. It works closely with DeSales Community Housing Corporation and
Neighborhood Housing Services. Volunteers are needed.
Our mission is as follows.
HOUSING DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MISSION:
* Identify and inventory neighborhood housing conditions.
* Identify areas in need of redevelopment.
* Research programs available at local, state and federal levels.
* Develop long and short term redevelopment goals.
* Identify and educate residents of programs promoting home ownership
and maintenance.
* Serve as liaison to DeSales Housing Corporation, Neighborhood Housing
Services and Alderpersons.
* Communicate and promote TGE housing development direction and priorities.
ACTIVITIES:
2002-2004
Housing Development Committee is assisting the DeSales Housing Corporation with fundraising using the
Missouri Department of Economic Development, Neighborhood Assistance Program Tax Credit program.
Goal: Raise over $200,000 to fund improvements in the targeted area
Targeted Area: Grand Avenue to Louisiana, Arsenal to Cherokee
Type of Improvements: Security measures, landscaping, facade improvements
Method of Selection: Lottery-type selection after applications filed
Activities to raise funds:
Contact all tax lawyers
Happy Hour gathering for South Grand businesses
House tour within the targeted area
Meet with larger stakeholders such as insurance companies (security), banks (mortgage lenders), home
improvement stores (project materials, do-it-yourself projects, landcaping)
Housing-related Speaker Support: Provide opportunities for organizations such as the St. Louis Housing
Authority, Neighborhood Housing Services, and Beyond Housing/Housing First to be on the agenda and
present program information to the members of the Tower Grove East Neighborhood Association.
2003
St. Louis Housing Authority:
Section 8 Housing Voucher program that helps property owners willing to responsibly manage properties - the
program provides stable income revenues and renters are required to pass police record checks.
Neighborhood Housing Services:
Mortgage programs that provide low interest loans.
Training program in household safety, presented with the St. Louis Fire Department - fire extinguishers and
fire alarms are given to those who participate.
Work with Aldermanic Representatives on the Rehab-a-Rama in 2002 (see before and after photos below).
