Stevens CEC
Stevens Middle Community Education Center, located at 1033 N. Whittier St., was erected in 1964. The school was named for Reverend George E. Stevens who was pastor of Central Baptist Church from 1903-1937. He was the first Negro Pastor to become a candidate for membership on the St. Louis Board of Education.

The building complex is a two-story brick structure consisting of thirteen (13) regular classrooms, six (6) special education rooms, a library, a gymnasium/auditorium, an industrial technology room, a home economics rooms and lunchroom.

Stevens Middle Community Education Center's attendance area is bounded by Lindell on the south, Martin Luther King on the north, Grand Avenue on the east and Kingshighway on the west. The students population is 100% black. Many of the parents of students qualify for state and federal assistance. Ninety percent of the students qualify for the free lunch subsidy program.

Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 attend the Stevens Middle Community Education Center. Sixty students are assigned to six special education classes. The total school population is 320.

The staff is composed of 10 regular classroom teachers, 6 special education teachers, 1 full-time resource teacher, 1 Title I Reading Teacher, 1 Title I Math Teacher, one (1) full-time enrichment teacher, and 1 librarian. In addition there are full time teachers for physical education, vocal music, instrumental music, art, industrial technology and home economics.

When: June 23 - August 13, 1997 Our hours of operation are 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Who: We accept children from the ages of 5 - 14 years. Birth certificates must be presented at the time of registration.

Cost: $10.00 per week for the first child in the home registered, and $5.00 per week for each additional sibling in the home. The first week's fee is due at the time of registration.

Latchkey services available for an additional charge: morning 7:00 - 8:00 am; $1.00 first child/ .50 per additional children per day: for afternoon latchkey services 4:30 - 6:00 pm is $1.50 first child/ .50 per additional children per day.
