Visitation Park's History

Historically significant educational facilities were the origin of several prominent St. Louis schools and colleges; in addition to being the Visitation Park Neighborhood's namesake.

Visitation Park's churches have a rich heritage. Pilgrim Congregational, Union Avenue Christian and Westminister Presbyterian churches are listed as St. Louis City landmarks.

Union Memorial Methodist Church, the third-oldest African-American church in St. Louis City, is the oldest continuing congregation of African-Americans in the city. The first congregation worshipped on Broadway between Morgan Street (Delmar) and Franklin (MLK) in the home of a slave. The church has been at many locations from its founding in 1840, but moved from the Mill Creek area to its present location in 1961.

The houses in Visitation Park Neighborhood have architectural import and are designed in a variety of styles including both American and European influences.

The streets that formed the northern and southern boundaries of the Cabanne Area (origin of the Visitation Park Neighborhood) were principal roads from St. Louis to The West.
