Visitation Park's History
Educational Facilities



These educational facilities were the origin of several St. Louis schools, colleges and cultural organizations.

Facilities History
Visitation Academy (1892) Moved to the county and the building was razed (1962) to become Visitation Park (currently Ivory Perry Park).
Smith Academy (1905) A private Manual Training School for boys, the male-counter part to Mary Institute, sponsored by Washington University. (1918) Ben Blewett Junior High School, (1949) Harris Teachers College and (1963) Enright Middle School.
St. Louis Artists Guild (1908) A cultural organization that moved to Webster Grove. The building became Dignity House, a UCC sponsored community and cultural-arts center.
Soldan High School (1909) The brightest gem in the St. Louis Public School System.
St. Philomena's  Technical School (1910) A training school for girls, later a nursing home and it housed Stella Maris Day Care Center prior to their relocation.
Young Men's Hebrew Association (1927) Moved to the New Jewish Center and the building is currently used as a Westend Community Center offices, a recreation center, Better Family Life, Inc. as well as, other community organizations.
